Meeting the CLP
/ GHS challenge
The
UN’s 'Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling
of Chemicals’ (GHS) addresses the classification of chemicals
by types of hazard and proposes harmonized hazard communication
elements; including labels and safety data sheets. It aims
to ensure that information on physical hazards and toxicity
from chemicals is available in order to enhance the protection
of human health and of the environment during the handling,
transport and use of these chemicals. The EU has implemented
GHS through Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008 (‘CLP Regulation’);
requiring manufacturers, importers and users of chemicals
to classify their substance according to CLP after December
2010 and mixtures after June 2015. The US Occupational Health
and Safety Administration (OSHA) required full implementation
of the GHS after June 1st, 2015.
